Happy Birthday Adam and Happy Easter Everyone!

Son #2 had a birthday this weekend. He is 14.
Time flies.

He is a low key boy and a chronic prankster - the one who tries to give me heart attacks by jumping out of the bushes.

He was very specific about what he wanted for his birthday - money and dinner out.
He s going to buy a unicycle and doesn't want us to choose it.

He loves eating out.
Unfortunately dinner last night was $115.00 worth of disappointment.
He's decided to open his own restaurant, he announced this morning, as he served me pancakes, chocolate eggs and coffee in bed.
The pancakes were delicious but I'm hoping he changes his mind about being a restauranteur.

His cast came off last Wednesday and his arm is still a bit bent.

It's closing day at Silver Star Mountain and he, Son #1 and The Husband are up for a day of skiing and snowboarding.
He's excited as it's been a while since he's been snowboarding without a cast.

I hope I don't get the call "mom, do you have Adams medical number"
I know I will be worrying until they all get home, safe and sound.

yikes... it's not easy being a worrier.

Next Stop - Portage and Main

When I lived in Winnipeg I took public transit to work (okay it was the bus).
A big orange bus.

Every morning there were the same semi-comatose  faces  staring blankly out the window.  We never spoke - perhaps the occasional nod.  There was an unspoken rule about personal space and the very obvious 'don't bother me' barriers.

Sometimes I read, or listened to music and stared out the window, but I never spoke except for "excuse me" when I needed to move someone so that I could get off at my stop.

Winnipeg has a wonderful music scene - perhaps because  so much time is spent indoors during the cold and windy winters or perhaps just because we are such a talented bunch of individuals who try so very hard.

In any case, many nights are spent in bars listening to the newest assemblage of talent wondering if  they were great because of all the beer we'd drank or if they really had a shot of becoming an international success.

One night in a bar I glimpsed a familiar face just as she saw mine - we rushed together, gave a big hug, "hi! how are you! good to see you!"  and then... realization

 Who the hell are you?

She was one of the bus riders that I never spoke to any morning - ever - the one with the extra-long big toenail that jutted out the end of her sandal and clicked the floor of the bus as she walked.

Awkward!

Canadian Wives!

Canadian Wives!!!!

Three Canadian men married wives from different countries. The first man married a woman from  China .  He told her that she was to do their dishes and house cleaning.  It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away.

The second Canadian man married a woman from Italy . He gave his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking.  The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day he saw it was better.  By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done and there was a huge dinner on the table.

The third Canadian man married a girl from  Canada .  He ordered her to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal.  He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher.

'I am committed' or' I need to be committed' or 'stop committing'

HA! HA!  I found this post that I somehow forgot to publish, or meant to get back to, or ran out of time to do... or ???
Is this the first sign of the dreaded old age brain?
Here it  - written on  January 17th!

It is at my house!

This is "the list" in no particular order.
It would help if there was some order to it but that would just be another "to do"
  1. New art gallery opening - wine and appies but they also mention yoga, I hope they are not expecting audience participation.
  2. Friends art show - she's very good, she's a teacher by day and a painter, mom and wife by night.
  3. Make more pottery for consignment - "make something nice", she requested.
  4. Finish pottery orders for valentines day - can Valentines Day be moved back two weeks?
  5. Drive Son #1 to the ski hill for Wednesday AM - that means getting up at 5 AM to drive and drop and be back at the office for 8AM.
  6. Nag Son #2 to study for exams in 5 days (that "good marks" ship might have sailed!)
  7. Co-worker on injury leave - check her emails and act accordingly.
  8. Boss on vacation - sign cheques and frown at the production line workers.  Say nothing.
  9. Temperature is -27 C.with the windchill - dress warm, take a hat and seethe inwardly at all those who are flying off to Mexico's beaches.
  10. Ladies night at my house in 6 days - need to start getting the food ready and need wine - lots and lots of wine.
  11. Clean the house before the "ladies" arrive or hide crap in closets.
  12. Come up with an "activity" for the ladies so they don't drink too much wine.  They hate doing crafts, I think we will make wire hearts for Valentine's day.  I am determined that they know the joy of making and creating, dammit.
  13. Friends With Benefits meeting tomorrow night.  We are artists who share ideas and encouragement - nothing else!
  14. Kitchen spices etc. home party at a friends house on Saturday - buying not selling - maybe I can use this for gifts.  This is the same night as the Art Gallery opening.  The plan is to drop in early, buy something and leave for the gallery.    Right, that will work.......

I have overlap, I have committed when I am unavailable, my friends are only a bit annoyed with me, my family wonders why I am talking to myself.
I can only hope its all uphill from here.

I can't remember that far back but apparently uphill didn't happen........

I have Culture - Live and Active!

This weekend I made yogurt.
It's not the first time but it has been a while.

It's like making bread.
When you make it you wonder why you don't always, but in reality, who has the time!

I made yogurt when my boys were toddlers  as I don't trust some of the food producers.
Not all - but some.
When I read an ingredients list that looks like chemical warfare I don't want my family ingesting too much of that stuff.

I have found some no-additive products but still, in the back of my mind, I question cleanliness and employee disgruntlement (is that  word? - it should be)

Where does it start though?
I don't milk  cows - or goat as the case may be .  I buy  milk from a grocery store and perhaps the dairy that the milk came from would annoy me if I were to inspect it closely.

Have you read the ingredients list of a whipping cream container?  Some of them have added cellulose.  Cellulose!  isn't that paper pulp? It's real name is hydroxypropyl methylcellulose.
My grocer told me it was a stabilizer.

I didn't buy his whipping cream.

Our government restricts me from buying dairy from the farmer down the road because it might be bad for us. Cellulose (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose)is good for us?
I just wanted whipping cream.

I'm pissed.
I'm writing a letter.  A stern letter.

Here is my recipe for yogurt.
It doesn't have cellulose in it, or gelatin, or artificial sweetener, or sugar, or cornstarch, or color,  or potassium sorbate.
It makes 5 pints and a half pint to use as starter for the next batch.

Sterilize 5 pint jars, 1 half pint jar and lids .  I usually boil them in a canner.
You will need as well a large heavy bottom pot with a lid, a candy thermometer, a sink 1/3 full of cold water and a small waterproof cooler.

8 cups milk - I use 2% but you can use whole or skim
1/2 cup plain yogurt - that has been stirred quite well
(this yogurt cannot have gelatin, additives and must be pure, plain yogurt) next time you can use the yogurt from the 1/2 pint made in this batch.
2 tbsp powdered milk - I use skim powder.

Put the milk and milk powder in the heavy pot and heat over med heat with the lid on.  Stir often to avoid scorch.
Scorched milk tastes nasty and, ergo, so will your yogurt - so keep a sharp eye on this!

When the temperature reaches 85 - 90 deg C (185-195 deg F) place the pot in the sink of cold water and whisk in the yogurt starter.  Stir until the temperature reaches about 55 deg C (125F) then pour into the sterilized jars.  Twist on lids finger tight and place them in the cooler.  Add hot water - no hotter than 50 deg C and no cooler than 40 deg C. about 2/3 up the sides of the jars. Close the lid.  Add hot water as necessary - I let the candy thermometer float around so that I can see the temperature at a glance.

Just a wee bit of information -  lactobacillus (yogurt culture)  won't grow below 37 deg C and will be killed above 55 deg C.

After about 3 hours, remove the jars from the cooler, dry them, tightened the lids a bit, mark the date on the jars and place in the fridge.  The lids will seal and the yogurt will keep for about 6 weeks (if the jars stay sealed)

Delicious!  but be sure to sterilize pots, stirring utensils and measuring cups

A Young Man with a Ton of Talent

I've been Absent a While and This is Why........

Yes it's SPAM.  About 150 per day.

It has reduced in numbers since I haven't been posting or commenting but they are still coming through.

Not sure why me - I don't have many followers and I don't get many hits.   At one time I was looking at my stats, so excited to see how many people had clicked onto my site and then I realized - Spammers !  Darn Them!

Any tips or hints?
Will they still find me if I discontinue the Comments section?
Apparently the "report as spam' button doesn't do a darn thing.

To try to make myself feel better I just read a bunch of Spam Poems on http://www.satirewire.com/features/poetry_spam/poetryintro.shtml
and hey! guess what?  I am not alone in this Spam attack.

grrrrr

Meantime in our household.

It's winter.  Still.

Son #2 broke his arm - Snowboarding Rail.

I got the call "mom, whats Adams medical number"  and then the phone went dead.
WHAT??? panic, cold sweats, rubber knees.

What a relief  that it was only a broken arm.

Son #1 thinks winter will end and bought himself a motorcycle.

sigh.

I think they are trying to kill me.
